Wood Countertops

Normally, wood countertops are more suitable for homes with traditional design. They tend to give these homes a nice rustic feeling. In fact, countertops made of wood are one of the oldest countertops used in this country. They are also known by the old name of butcher blocks. Now, wood countertops are also designed so that they can easily adapt to our modern settings. This is only proper because it is not quite right to just confine the beautiful grains of wood and its natural strength to homes of traditional motif. It is not wrong to say that wood can also be tailored to our modern designs.

In recent years many consumers have become more eco-conscious and are now looking at how natural materials, such as wood, can be incorporated into the home. One such way is to use wood countertops in your home. If properly assembled and fitted, wood is able to withstand the workload of daily food preparation. By this, we mean, choosing the right kind of hardwood and assembling them in such a way that they will really be strong.

The species of wood used for kitchen countertops are hardwoods like Maple, Oak and Cherry. Construction involves assembling these hardwoods using the end-grain method. That means the end-grains of the wood planks will constitute the surface of the countertop. So the completed countertop with have lots of small rectangualr shapes on the surface. These are actually the end-grains of the wood planks. The strongest wood countertops are produced using this method of assembly. You can confidently use these types of countertops for any heavy duty activity because they are truly hard and strong.

However, since wood is a porous material, you need to protect its surface from the damaging effects of water, dirt and grime. In order to do this, countertop builders will seal and laminate the wood countertop surface before they are installed. A periodic re-sealing and re-laminating is also required at least once a year – if you want to extend its life. Wood is also prone to scratches and dents, therefore, do not cut food stuffs directly on its surface. Always use a chopping block to prevent accidental scratches. And be careful about dropping heavy objects suddenly on the countertop. They will cause ugly dents on the surface.

How to remove spilled shampoo?

I spilled a bottle of shampoo on a wood butcher block table. Any suggestions on how to clean?

use paper towels to clean up what you can. then when you have removed most of the shampoo, and the surface is just sticky, spray some windex on the area where it spilled. let it sit for about 2 minutes, then go back and wipe it up. you may need to spray and wipe it again, but that should take care of it. and most importantly... dont use water. that will just make a big soapy mess. hope this helps(:
