Check Out The Battery First When It Comes To Auto Electrical Issues With Your Automobile

The auto electrical systems in the current day's cars are far more complex and intricate than they were in previous years. Gone are the times when just anybody can tinker with a vehicle unless they have expansive understanding of the car's electrical system tied in with the PC. It is extremely important that somebody obtain an education in the area of automobile electrical craftsman to be in a position to correctly work on and fix the vehicles manufactured today. "Wires" are all over the place under the hood, connecting the PC to diverse elements surrounding the engine and transmission. All of them work together and if one area goes down, the PC will be first to let you know. It could be helpful to learn a touch about the primary electrical areas under the bonnet the battery.

The 1st area of the auto electrical system that's considered is the battery. The battery is the device that stores the electricity in which the car runs. Most batteries are 12 volts and the primary purpose is to help initially start the vehicle. There are six cells that have stacked positive and negative lead plates with an insulator separating. These are in an electrolyte mix that is composed of sulfuric acid and water. The cells produce 2.1 volts of stored electricity. There is deadly gases that are created from the chemical reaction between the lead plates and the electrolyte solution. These gases vent through the battery cover. Keep this under consideration whenever working near the car battery, never cover it.

More recent batteries are far more maintenance free and use a gel that replaces the electrolyte solution. When batteries age they can lose their charging capacity, the plates will get worse and the links will breakdown. At the first sign of auto electrical failure the battery should be the first point of observation of the voltage. If the battery is reasonably new and shows no sign of corrosion. The battery should be tested before the alternator or starter (which may also be responsible for electrical failure). A good digital volt Ohm meter is all that is needed to test the battery. And if it indicates it is low, then a battery re-energiser may be in order.

If the auto electrical system has failed and you establish it to be due to the battery, it would be sensible to first test the entire electrical system before replacing the battery. Test the alternator to make sure it is working right. Replacing a battery on a failing alternator will not stop the alternator from going out, if that is where the issue lies. Batteries tend to last around 3 to five years. Extreme cold climates could have batteries last only two to three years.

A qualified auto electrician should be well placed to work on the battery or on any auto electrical element in the automobile. The complex system of vehicles today requires rather more education and experience to be in a position to work on all makes of autos, particularly the electric and computer components.

Anyone have any advice on this?

My friend's mother has an old pos car that he wants to set on fire and it's older than dirt but she's insisting he fix it. (he's a mechanic) He's done a bunch of stuff already and is wondering if anyone else has any ideas or advice... that hopefully is not buy gasoline.

Symptoms:
Barely get the car to idle.
Have to insanely pump gas petal to make it go at all.

What he's done already:

1990 Olds Cutlass Supreme: Replaced the fuel pump and injectors. Supposed to have five volts reference voltage going to the throttle position, map, coolant temp sensor. Only has two volts. Replaced computer, throttle position sensor, and the air conditioning pressure transducer. Wiring checks out alright.
Haven't tried the map sensor yet, did this solve your issue?

Change the MAP sensor.

Been there!

Yep.

2013 Chevrolet Malibu (Automobilemag)

**2013 Chevrolet Malibu**

The 2013 Malibu (on sale in early 2012) has been redesigned inside and out.
It's a clear evolution of the previous design but is far bolder. Inside, Chevy
promises better materials and an increase in interior volume.

Although Chevy's hugely successful redesign of the Malibu debuted roughly four
years ago, an all-new Malibu is already going into production in early 2012 as
a 2013 model. The new Malibu is being touted as the brand's "first global mid-
size vehicle," which Chevy has plans to sell on six continents. The exterior
is noticeably sleeker, with a wider stance and a Camaro-inspired rear fascia.
Chevy designers would probably like to take all the credit, but the sleeker
profile was also influenced by engineers who logged hundreds of hours in the
wind tunnel. From underbody panels to active shutters in the grille, the new
car has numerous aerodynamic aids that improve its drag coefficient by more
than .06 over the previous Malibu, bringing it to within .01 of the Volt.
Better aerodynamics often result in better fuel economy, but Chevy didn't stop
there. A brand-new, more-fuel-efficient 2.5-liter four-cylinder replaces the
Malibu's previous roster of powerplants. Power ...
