Arbor Presses: A Metal Shop Must-Have - ToolsRUs

Very useful for performing relatively small tasks such as riveting, staking and installing or removing bearings, arbor presses are hand-operated tools that generate an incredible amount of force. These tools feature a metal ram or rack that is brought down onto an object. The heavy-duty ram is oriented vertically and moved by means of a rotating lever. Metal shops have use for this tool, as do mechanics and small-scale assembly facilities. They are, in general, smaller than other types of presses and are often bolted to a work bench. The tool is best suited for relatively small assembly, production and metal repair jobs.

Weighing up to 100 pounds or more, this type of press is made of forged and cast metal. Arbor presses feature vertically-oriented rams that may have either a rounded or square bottom. The press consists of four basic parts: the body, the handle assembly, the plate and the rack. Typically made from cast metal, the body of the press will have a shape that varies according to the the design, but bolt holes in the foundation are included for work bench mounting. The upper part of the body is where the handle assembly and rack attach, while the plate rests on the foundation.

The part that does the actual pressing is the rack, the vertically moving component. One side is toothed to allow the internal gear mechanism to grab it as the handle is turned. The operator has to apply relatively little force in order to generate several tonnes of corresponding force upon a metal object. Depending on the tool, an arbor press is capable of apply as much as five tonnes of force. This is more than adequate for most small metal production or assembly jobs such as stamping, bearing removal or high-pressure repair or flattening.

You can adjust the leverage ratio of the press according to how much force is required for a particular job. The most leverage is gained by extending the handle entirely to one side of the gear. By contrast, the least amount of leverage is gained with the ends of the handle equidistant from the center gear of the assembly. With more leverage, it is far easier to apply a greater amount of force.

What's the most terrifying nightmare you've ever had?

It's not the worst/most graphic i've ever had, but the other night i dreamt about cannibals. I was in this weird barn with a group of other people, and we were on a rotating rack and there were these cannibals around us and they'd randomly throw gravy at the group of people, and whoever it landed on, was going to be eaten by them. I escaped and for the rest of the dream i was just running and running from them, but there was always one of them not far behind me. After running up a hill, i ran into a town where there were lots of people, but i was still scared because i didn't know whether or not these people were cannibals too!

and then i woke up and couldn't sleep.

I dreamed I shot myself in the head.

The entire dream had the surreal/hyper-real quality of a suicide attempt with nothing that denied logic, and I spent most of it deciding what caliber gun to use because of a story one of my elementary school teachers had told me (in real life) about an ex-boyfriend who had tried to shoot himself with a low caliber gun and survived, then drove himself to the hospital and had his frontal lobe removed.

Recoil Winders Is A Brilliant Idea To Combat Cable Clutter (Ohgizmo)

By David Ponce One day we're going to get rid of these cables. Just like we're
slowly getting rid of paper. Until then we still have to find ways to deal
with them, and the Recoil Winder is a smart option. It's a small accessory
that contains a rotating hub with a hook. To put [...]
