Making a knife - Sharpening steel?

I have a complete and ready to go knife.
The only problem is the steel blade is still dull.
For the sake of my question, imagine a fixed blade fighting knife (like a Kabar) that has no edge on it (like someone ground the cutting edge square).
How do I properly make a bevel (coarse edge) to the knife to be able to finish it off with a sanding stone?
Shade tree people will say "use a grinder" to put a coarse edge on it.
Is this the best way for a home do-it-yourselfer to obtain a coarse edge?
I do plan on filing/sanding/using a sharpening stone for the final edge.
How do I get it to be the correct angles in order to put on a finishing edge?
Thx!

You have to go careful on a grinder or sander and be very deliberate with your movements.Think about what you are doing and have plenty of light. Dont take it back all the way to the shape you want though. Finish the shaping with a hand file that is new or at least sharp. dip the blade in bucket of water frequently if you use grinder. The filing is fairly hard work but it will ensure you dont stuff up the shape or put a grinding mark in the blade. When using bench grinder, wear safety glasses and watch your fingers, use sweeping movements . There is also a floppy sanding disk which goes on a 5 inch angle grinder that is good for shaping blades. Keep the blade moving over the grind stone or vice versa if you use angle grinder. practice on scrap steel to get your confidence up. the more you can do with a power tool, the less work with the file, but once again be careful. look at amother already made knife of the same thickness as your blank and try to copy the angle when beginning to shape. Once you have it ground and filed to where you can feel a rough edge,(this will take some time and patience),then put it on the sharpening stone with your ground edge laying flat on the stone.simply raise the back of the blade a little to get your honing angle for final sharpening. good luck, making knives is a great hobby and you get better the more you practice
