Learning Life Lessons with Educational Games Such as Magnetic Building Sets

Special things can happen with children and their toys.  Growing up, I can't think of a girl who didn't own a Barbie or a boy who didn't run around the backyard wielding action figures to conquer classic villains.  I recall building sets being spread all over the floors of every playroom I entered as a child, including my own.  We would  construct astonishing things with those building sets; tall buildings for our Barbie doll or stuffed toys to live in, a store where they would buy all of their groceries; the things we could create was only limited by our imaginations.  While toys similar to these don't neatly fit into the category of educational toys, they can teach valuable lessons.

Every type of toy is important to children, even those that parents may not at first believe to be educational toys.  This is as true today as it was 30 years ago when I sat playing board games with my sister.  Children learn through play, and they develop their imaginations and their critical thinking skills.  While it may seem that only educational games have the ability to teach a child anything, that would be a misconception.  Actually, most toys are educational games when you recognize that a child learns from playing freely.

Most people agree that strategy games, while offering a lot of entertainment, also work on developing a child's reasoning talents as well as coping skills.  Every player does not win in strategy games, and at times losing at something is an important lesson for a child to learn as winning is.  When one player wins and the other loses in a board game, one player is humbled while the other, hopefully, learns to be a polite winner.  With the aid of a focused parent, children will develop these skills.  So popular are particular board games that they are now being made in ways that they can be played in the car.  Travel games may not be as exciting as the original board games, but it sure keeps a child engaged in the car!

Since the 1940's, children and their parents have spent hours building their relationships over scale model sets. The wonderfully colorful blocks in a Lego set bring forward the very best in a child's imagination, and keep them occupied for days.  The great thing about LEGO sets is that just one set could produce a number of different items, from a person to a gas station.  Over the years, Lego sets have grown to where there are now sets mainly for girls, such as the Belville line.  Of course, boys love Lego sets like Star Wars or Bionicles.  But youngsters can learn deftness and creativity through Lego sets, and that's what is really important.

Need convincing of the value of Lego sets as an educational toy?  Studies have shown that children acquire new neural connections when building with magnetic building sets. By simply playing with their Lego set, kids also learn spatial concepts, cause-and-effect, and fine motor skills.  This is a wonderful way to learn!

Parks and Recreation Recap: Love Is a Battlefield (New York Magazine)

She boasts a collection of miniature flags from all 193 countries in the
United Nations. He super-did Model U.N. in high school and kind of wants to
roll up his sleeves and make geopolitical problem-solving his bitch. Yet they
can't be together ... because of government. It's a tragic story as old as
time, or at least as old as 1945.

Helping Pawnee Central High School save its troubled Model U.N. club seems
like the perfect proving ground for Ben and Leslie to explore their nascent
platonic friendship -- he's Peru, she's Denmark, Andy's Finland, April is
South Africa but also secretly the moon, and Ron would rather engage in his
every-three-weeks toenail-sanding than participate in this celebration of a
worldwide supergovernment. (They're too strong for clippers.) But it's a lot
harder to make unresolved romantic attachments your bitch, and what begins as
a concerted effort to relieve world famine turns into a blood feud between a
politically ambitious but remorseful Denmark and a supportive but jilted and
heartsick Peru, who is already prone to really long sadness baths, after the
latter watches the former neglect a delicate treaty negotiation in favor of
campaign photo-ops. (Adam ...
