Consolation Food: Selfmade Soup For The Soul

Properly, the kiddies are back to school, the leaves are starting to turn yellow, we're harvesting our garden, the air is cool at night time and it is September the 1st. To me that looks like fall and time for home made soup!

Now, normally the thought of summer time ending would make me sad, but not this year. It was one of those bad summers you just want to see it end. Plus it was so cold, we do not even feel like we had summer. So convey on the fall! Embracing the season wholeheartedly and hoping for an extended heat one! The first thing I'm doing is checking my pantry. This is an Organizing Tip: Preserve your soup-making elements collectively in your pantry. Also I am combing by my soup recipes.

There was nothing like returning home from an extended faculty-bus trip (one hour long) to the aroma of mom's selfmade soup simmering on the stove. It was so delicious, especially with the entire contemporary greens from the garden. Or make a pot if you find yourself having firm coming. After sitting in a car all day, there's nothing extra warming than a bowl of soup and biscuits. It truly is consolation food.

However as I watch what is happening on the earth situation economically, soup can also be an effective way to stretch your budget. You can make a nutritious meal for your loved ones on pennies. Maybe that's one motive why mom made soup, to feed her family of 9. However it felt as if we had been eating like kings.

Certainly one of my soup reminiscences occurred at one among our household reunions in December. It was cold and we have been making soup to serve as each member arrived. We heard the car pull up and shut the range off to go out and greet my sister and family. Later we may odor something burning. Oh no! The soup!

Relatively than turn the stove off, we turned it on High! We were going to throw it out, but one visitor and buddy refused to waste it and thought it doable to be salvaged. She tenaciously began including spices and herbs, however it still tasted burnt. So she saved including ingredients from the fridge, a lot that the soup now stretched into 2 pots, after which 3. Finally she did it. She salvaged that soup, and it was one of the best ever!

I was young and wished I paid extra consideration to what she did, and my mother is not alive to ask her, however I feel her secret was to use potato, then throw the potato out. Plus, she transferred the soup to a different pot and discarded the burnt part. I'd like to attempt it out, however then I would have to burn a pot of soup..... Nah! So we are going to simply should go with my memory....

Additionally, after we first moved to British Columbia, we decided to drive to Alaska, just to have seafood. We have been in Haynes and there I had the perfect Seafood Chowder I had ever eaten. So I asked the waitress if they offer out the recipe. She mentioned she would ask the cook, and he said "sure."

I had to meet him the following day and he gave me a sheet of paper with the recipe which went one thing like this:

"Cook and drain 50 kilos of potatoes, then in 2 pounds of butter cook 2 pounds of onions diced, 1 pound of celery....... and season to taste." He could have simply stated no, it is a secret! However that did not stop me. The challenge was on to see if I could repeat his recipe... and we did. I promise to share that with you, however I would like to take pictures for you. I promise I won't forget.

How about if you find yourself sick? Nothing like a pot of home made hen soup. We cook dinner up a pot with 12 whole garlic cloves. You can't inform there's that much garlic, and you at all times feel better after a bowl.

Don't you just love Mulligatawny Soup with apples and curry? Or a favorite that Ken's mother made was Corn Chowder with ham. My private favourite is Turkey, I really like turkey and might eat all of it week, after which transfer into turkey soup with my fresh chopped dill, barley and cabbage. Have you ever ever made stew after which served it in hollowed out bread bowls? That is fun. I make a 2 pound loaf of French Bread in my bread machine, take out the dough and form it into 3 balls, let rise and baked. Reduce in half, scoop out the flesh and serve your stew contained in the bowl.

To get you into the temper of making soup, simply lower up some onion and celery and begin sautéing in a pan. You will see everyone come running eager to know what smells so good. Then start adding veggies, broth and whatever is in your fridge. I really like including cabbage to soup, to me it is the secret ingredient to an excellent do-it-yourself soup. Or make Hamburger Soup, Split-Pea, Beer Stew, French Onion Soup or Fish Chowder. I really like so many, it can be exhausting to resolve which one to make.

However I've a recipe you likely NEVER heard of before. This was Ken's invention with rising up north and is the perfect solution to robust financial times. Do not let the identify make you flip your nostril, his soup is great and he is broadly known for this creation..... Wiener Soup. We could even name this Recession Soup! Ken mainly throws in whatever is in the fridge, but by no means something green. Here is the Recipe:

Recession Soup

1 1/2 cups Onion, diced
1 cup Cabbage, sliced skinny
1 cup Carrots, diced
2 cloves Garlic, minced
Celery - about 1.5 cups
5 cups Water, Beef or Chicken Stock
1 Large can of Tomatoes, diced
1 cup Yellow Beans
1 tsp. Salt
1 tsp. Pepper
1 tsp. Worcestershire Sauce
half of tsp. Tabasco Sauce
1 cup Corn
1 cup Potatoes (add once you add the pasta)
1 cup Macaroni (or Pasta of your choice)
And naturally - Wieners. Up to a dozen, I had 5 on hand.

Directions:

In a big pot or Dutch Oven, sauté onions, celery, cabbage and garlic in Canola Oil. Add the remainder of the ingredients up to Worcestershire Sauce and simmer until tender. Then add potatoes, pasta and corn and cook dinner until nearly done. Add minimize up wieners and heat until they're puffed. Trust me - this soup is yummy, it has a bit of spiciness. If you sit all the way down to eat, and there is a knock on the door, just add one other cup of water. Get pleasure from!

Orphan Week Essay: Orphaned At 16, Or How I Learned To Cook Turkey (B5 Media)

It's Thanksgiving day. I’m sixteen years old, the eldest of four children,
orphaned as of the night before. Well, parentless. My folks won a five-day,
all expense paid vacation for two that had to be used by December 1st. A free
vacation is a free vacation, so off they went to the Bahamas, leaving me in
charge of three loud kids ranging in age from six to 14. More »
