How You Can Enjoy Wine On A Boat

Thankfully wine is a very versatile drink that can be consumed in all manner of locations. In the park, on the beach, or just on your living room couch. You can even enjoy a glass or two whilst sailing the seven seas, but it is sometimes a bit tricky and there are some tips you that should learn first to get the most from each bottle.

Keeping it cool. When it comes to the temperature of wine, its fine to serve red at room temp without chilling it at all. The same cannot be said for white wine however, or indeed champagne which is at its best when it has been chilled...something not easy to achieve on a boat with no fridge. You can always rely on natures refrigerator though, a cool your bottles using sea water. You can literally dunk them over the side of the boat (insuring they are secured first) and leave them for an hour or so before drinking. The temp of the sea does of course depend on where you are, but in most places it will be cold enough.

Stopping it breaking
. Boats tend to move about a bit when they are out at sea and bottles can become easily broken. If they are packed up well and not allowed to move around then they should be ok, but there is another precaution you can take. If you place your wines in wine bags they act to protect them further and stop any liquid escaping if the bottles do break.

Getting the cork out
. You may want to break a bottle on your hull to christen your vessel, but this isn’t much use if you want to drink the stuff. Try not to get the cork wet as it can swell and this can make it harder to remove. Also, don’t try to remove the cork by improvising with all manner of tableware or fishing hooks. Use a good bottle opener and take your time. If you end up corking it then you might be a quite a way from another bottle.

Fiskars ShopBoss: multiscissors to the limit (boingboing)

Writing for MAKE:, Gareth Branwyn reviews the Fiskars ShopBoss, a sucessor, of
sorts, to the multi-scissors the company shipped last year. Fiskars is the
Finnish giant of bladed tools, renowned for generations for its knives and
other blades. Gareth really likes the ShopBoss though he has a few
reservations: The heart of the ShopBoss is [...]
